On a recent trip to Washington DC, I was reminded of the unique power of words well spoken or well written when I visited the Lincoln memorial along with my wife and children. After viewing Lincoln's immense, gaunt figure, I read his speeches which were engraved in the walls on either side of the carving of the 16th American president.
Lincoln's speeches are powerful and moving, even now after seven-score years or more have passed. Perhaps they are more powerful than many speeches because they are embedded with spiritual truth and the words of the Bible. God, too, used powerful words to accomplish His will.
The Father's words brought the world into existence. And down through the centuries, His words have encouraged, inspired, rebuked, and informed prophet and peasant alike. His words have changed lives and moved people to influence the world in mighty ways. Yet, I believe the most important words spoken by God, are three words uttered as Christ hung bleeding and wounded on the cross: "It is finished."
Those three small words echoed the charge of all eternity. God's magnificent plan of redemption for humans had reached its climax. Men had been gloriously reunited with God. Of course, at times it seemed as though all was lost and the human road was desolate, hopeless and full of despair. Yet, Christ's words on the cross confirmed that the yearning of men and women since the Fall of Adam and Eve had been fulfilled.
As you journey throughout your life, consider the words of Christ on the cross: "It is finished." The reign of death, hell, and despair is over. The floodgates of mercy and redemption have been swung open wide. Remember the words of Christ. Love them. Cherish them. Think on them. Live by them.
